GUT HEALTH
We both have a deep love of food, with our kitchen serving as the heart of our home. Cooking together and for our children is a source of joy, as is growing and cultivating our own ingredients. Living in such an abundant region, we feel fortunate to have access to high-quality fruit and vegetables.
Gut health is central to overall wellbeing, influencing everything from digestion and energy to mood and immunity. Conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are common, affecting up to 15% of people, but gut issues can have many causes ranging from diet, stress, and lifestyle to genetics and emotional health.
Both biomedicine and Chinese medicine recognise the complexity of gut health. Western approaches often focus on symptom management using dietary changes, medications, and even psychological therapies like cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). It is now understood that there is a “brain-gut axis,” highlighting the link between mental and digestive health.
Chinese medicine looks for underlying imbalances in the body’s energy systems, with diagnoses based on patterns involving the liver, spleen, and digestive organs. Treatment may include acupuncture, herbal medicine, dietary advice, and lifestyle guidance to restore harmony and support digestion.
Research shows that no single treatment works for everyone, and the best results often come from a personalised, integrative approach which we do best. Excluding other diseases, addressing acute symptoms, and supporting mental wellbeing are all important. Building a strong therapeutic relationship, encouraging self-care, and combining the strengths of both Western and Chinese medicine can help improve gut health and quality of life.
If you’re experiencing ongoing digestive issues, whether it’s bloating, pain, irregular bowel movements, or other concerns, our clinic offers a holistic assessment and tailored plan to support your gut and overall wellbeing.
PS. There is a lot to this topic so we will be adding individual digestive concerns to our blog and updating this page regularly
